Can you hear me know
Filed Under on the bus | 4 Comments
Coming home on the bus, a woman was at the back of the bus. She was calling someone on her cell phone, apparently she was trying to hook up with them down town and had gotten on the wrong bus.
Maybe the phone connection wasn’t very good because she was loud, very loud, she kept saying she had to get off the bus and meet the person she was talking to. She was getting louder and louder, to the point that she was almost shouting at the top of her voice;
“Vern, Vern, meet me on 2nd ave, I’m on the wrong bus.”
A couple sitting behind me were commenting and hoping she would hurry up and get off the bus.
I’m thinking; Dang woman, you;re shouting so loud Vern doesn’t need the cell phone he can probably hear you shouting!
There was almost a spat of applause when she finally got off the bus.
I wonder if some people don’t realize with modern phone technology you can virtually whisper into a cell phone and the person on the other end can hear you perfectly.

Freezing the nuts off a brass monkey
Filed Under on the bus, on the street | 9 Comments
I don’t drive and am used to commuting on buses, the worst thing is being subject to adverse weather. My job is good in that when there is inclement weather they will close as a snow day or have a delayed opening.
This morning I looked out the window and there was a light dusting but nothing too bad I thought. I walked down the hill to the bus stop, a lot of ice on the roads. The bus has to come down an even steeper hill, but I hoped it would make it.
After almost an hour of waiting I decided maybe the buses weren’t running, to get to another route I’d have to traverse some hills, I am standing there all bundled up but still freezing. A young guy at the stop is wearing just a thin hoodie and is shivering like he is about to freeze solid, he is messing with a large video iPod so I assume he could afford a better coat!
My extremities are all about to break off, my feet are like blocks of ice. I decided to start texting my work mates to take my mind off the cold. They all drive or use van pools or the train. The fact I have to take my glove off to text doesn’t make much sense!
They start texting me back that I am crazy and to take care.
Text messages: “It is so cold it can freeze the nuts off a brass monkey.”
“I’m colder than Frosty’s tits!”
“Nuts warming over a open fire, is it frostbite when your fingers turn black?”
“Okay, no worries I am wearing black gloves!”
“The brass monkey needs the Super glue.”
“Cannot feel my fingers, toes or nuts, wait, I can feel my nuts, mmmmmmmm.”
I definitely don’t envy the people who live in places that get a lot colder weather than we do. Trust me to marry a woman from Seattle!

BBC News Friday: Bear to be honored soldier
Filed Under BBC News | 9 Comments
BBC News Friday:
A bear that died at Edinburgh Zoo in 1963 is hopefully to be honored as a soldier. Polish solders during WWII came across a bear in Iran, they befriended the young bear and adopted him as their regimental mascot. To be able to take the bear with them it got enlisted and was given a rank. The bear was used for carrying supplies and apparently was friendly. He also liked a cigarette and a beer like any good soldier.
When the regiment went to a base in Scotland the bear ended up i the zoo there where he lived out the rest of his life.
Definitely a cool story and I hope the bear gets honored.

On the bus coffee
Filed Under on the bus | 3 Comments
Sitting at the front of the bus a guy sat down on the bench seat in front of me. He hangs his travel coffee mug over the handrail in front of me by its handle. I immediately envisaged the bus going over a bump and the mug swiveling over the rail and ending up upside down over my lap, if the top came off I’d be doused in some nice hot coffee.
Not likely to have happened by my mind just explored the possibility, if it did happen, two things would’ve happened. I would have screamed like a little girl and “whapped” the features of the guy’s face with the back of my hand.
Luckily, there was no screaming or “whapping”.

My second home
Filed Under wife | 9 Comments
Oops, methinks the wife does think my second home is the magic shop down stairs in the Pike Place Market on the Seattle waterfront. Like hanging out there, watching the demonstrations of the effects, perusing the books and DVD’s and adding to my collection.
I have a couple of projects, I mentioned a magic show for the grand kids and their friends, so I talked myself into doing that. I am also working on some mentalism type stuff, reading minds, bending silverware etc. Wife suggested I can do some stuff at her 50th birthday party that is in April.
So busy with trying to get some routines and effects together for those.
Plus, whenever any magicians or entertainers come through Seattle they invariably visit the magic store, the wall is papered with signed photos and the like. Penn & Teller (I saw them perform in Seattle), Banachek, Max Maven and a slew of others great entertainers.
At least the wife knows where I am likely to be if I am out and I’m not gambling or drinking or up to no good in other ways, not that I am prone to do those things anyway.

But you’re English!
Filed Under uncategorized | 10 Comments
At my job we have nearly 500 people who come from far and wide, we have scientists from almost every country of the world, the president is English like I am and there are about five Brits in the company.
Anyhoo, after work yesterday I popped down to Pike Place Market on the waterfront, went into the the Magic shop to check out some DVD’s. While there I noticed the president of my company walk in. He was buying a magic trick to perform for his grand kids. I stepped next to him, the guy behind the counter who I had been talking to earlier, mentioned the fact we both had something in common being interested in magic and both being English.
I said, “Yes and he is the president of the company where I work.”
“I am?” he replies. He asked my name and what department I worked in and then said “But you’re English!”
I pointed out that yes I am and that he says the same thing every time he sees me. I guess not mingling with the president and VP’s of the company much means he doesn’t remember me all that much.
Now he knows I am interested in magic, maybe he will remember me better.
He suggested at the next company event we can do a double act, but that he gets to saw me in half.

BBC News Friday: Edible art
Filed Under BBC News | 2 Comments
BBC News Friday:
BBC News had an article, a series of photos taken of wonderful scenes made with foodstuffs found in the kitchen. Very creative and imaginative, I wonder how edible the food stuff is after the photo shoots. When photographers shoot food sometimes they are sprayed with various liquids to give them a sheen and a make them look more desirable.
Pretty cool stuff, BBC News food pictures link

Sitting comfortable
Filed Under uncategorized | 2 Comments
I went into the store on the way home, walking along the aisles I came to the magazine and book section. Sitting on the floor was a young lady, she was atop a comfy looking small bean bag and fully engrossed in the pages of a magazine.
She looked totally comfortable and happy reading away while people shopped around her. I don’t know if she brought her own bean bag or whether she pulled it off a nearby shelf.
Have to admit not necessarily something I’d feel comfortable doing myself.
