Guest Post, Dad: The Flight of Strix

Time for another of my Dad’s pieces, this time I decided to pick something other than his Animal Dances.
This piece is called The Flight of Strix1 and was previously published in 1995 in Poets Parade by Avon Books.

The Flight of Strix

by Mick.

I stood and gazed in wonder at that panoply of night, for a galaxy of shinning stars was all that met my sight.

From the corner of an eye, I saw it as silently as death, and for a fraction of a heartbeat I took not a breath. High in the star-lit heavens an alien craft flew by, turning twinkling stars to darkness in the winking of an eye.

I stood there in the darkness, and as the trees around, in fear and trepidation, stood rooted to the ground. There were visions then of ray-machines inter-galactic strife, then I pulled myself together and ran to warn the wife.

But turning back, looked harder at this alien machine, I could be hallucinating or it could be but a dream. As I looked with more acuity, my vision sharpened by a third, it was not an alien craft I saw, but a great night-flying bird.
