Moleskine hack: secret compartments
Filed Under moleskine | 4 Comments
After doing the Moleskine hack to make my Moleskine into a wallet/GTD doodad, written about here: Moleskine wallet/GTD hack, I was inspired by several other posts on similar stuff I looked at. I pulled out an old beat up Moleskine that had ideas that had all been written up for various blogs.
Being a bit of a James Bond geek too and having just watched the Quantum of Solace trailer, I went to work. Pulled out my iPod, RSA secure ID card and one of my USB drives.
I used about six glue sticks gluing together a block of pages, then put the book between two bits of cardboard and put a pile of heavy books atop that. Before the glue was completely dry I drew around the items I wanted inside the notebook and used a few X-Acto blades cutting out the compartments (oh the sacrilege!).
Once dry the items fit snuggly into the notebook and if you open the book there are a few pages of notes like a regular book before you get to the goodies. I added a little notch so I could plug the ear buds into the iPod and listen to it inside the book. This and my Moleskine wallet will slide into my front jeans pockets if needed. No more having the items lolling around in my bag, they are all together and protected.
What a geek!

Sittting by the pool
Filed Under grand kids | Leave a Comment
Aurianna and Alec ‘Zander two of our grandkids are here, we haven’t seen them in a while so it is good having them here.
For the second time today I am sitting by the pool, this time I am not swimming with Aurianna and Alec who are spending the weekend with us. This morning grandma and I swam with them, now they wanted to come again with their friends. Hopefully Alec won’t doa cannon ball too near me and the laptop.
Hopefully they will sleep fine tonight after wearing themselves out. Earlier they decided they wanted to break out grandpa’s Maglites and sleep on the closet floor!
Aurianna told grandma that our new place doesn’t look like our place because we haven’t finished putting all our stuff back up, so grandma is unpacking all her knick-knacks and filling up the curio cabinets.
Kids are currently enthralled by the dragon flies flitting around and a hawk which is hanging around the pool and chasing the smaller birds looking for a quick lunch.
Aurianna just asked me why there are so many dead mosquitoes in the swimming pool.
“Because they can’t swim.”

USB dude and others on the bus
Filed Under on the bus | 6 Comments
The tourettes guy was having another bad day on the bus, shouting “I’m mad I’m going kill somebody,” a few people told him to shut up.
Another guy got on sporting a hefty backpack that had a computer logo on it so I think he had a laptop in there. Around his neck was a lanyard with a USB device hanging from it. My immediate thought was that this wasn’t a good idea, he should pocket that thing and pull it out at work when he needs it. What with the hustle and bustle of commuting and the chance of snagging the lanyard on something he could easily lose the thing without realizing it.
Losing it would probably suck especially if he didn’t have it encrypted. All my USB drives, whether personal or from work have encryption on them and you need a fourteen character password to access them.
This time we also had loud cell phone lady, I think she doesn’t realize how loud she gets. The whole bus heard her tell the other party that her cell phone battery was getting low and then to compensate she started talking louder.
How can one sleep with that racket going on?
…and now a word from our sponsor, diet pills, okay two words!

Filed Under Trailers | 2 Comments
We saw the trailers for Watchmen when we wne tot see the latest Batman movie, one of my favorite graphic novels. I thoroughly enjoyed the novel when it first came out although haven’t read it in a while and cannot remember a huge amount about it, but intend to get it again.
Looking forward to the movie.

Browsers working
Filed Under blogging | 4 Comments
After reading Adam’s comment on my browser post below I deleted all cache, cookies, stored passwords and internet files and now Firefox 3 will let me login and access by WordPress admin pages.
Bloody computers at times drive ya nuts.
Anyhoo, I came home from work to find golf balls strewn across the front lawn, okay! Neighbor stuck her head out her door and apologized and said her kids had been playing with them, she stopped them before they whacked some through windows thankfully.
Have to admit the kids though are usually very well behaved and very polite and not too noisy. Aurianna and Alec two of our grand kids know these kids and will be playing with them at the weekend as they are both spending the weekend with us. I foresee it being a bit noisier but that is okay.

Arghh frickin browsers
Filed Under blogging | 5 Comments
For the longest time my default browser has been Firefox 2, Microsoft’s IE just sits around collecting dust unused. I upgraded to the latest Firefox 3, which was great, then I upgraded WordPress (despite having a plugin to automate the process, it is still daunting), and Firefox won’t let me log in to my WordPress admin page to do stuff.
arse!
Went back to Firefox 2 and it worked, arghhh.
Anyhoo, my default browser is now Apple’s Safari, appears to work faster and everything is operating as it should.
What next? dumping the PC for a Macbook or sumthin?
Latest gadget acquisition: A Sony 2 GB USB drive for just under $13.00, $17.00 off at Staples, weirdly the 1 GB version was more expensive.

Batman and the Dyson Airblades
Filed Under wife | 6 Comments
Carolyn and I got up early today and took off on the bus, a local mall had a new section open up and they added a huge multiplex cinema. The cinema still had construction going on but they opened some of their screens.
We saw Batman The Dark Knight, enjoyed it a lot, I like these darker versions of Batman rather than the earlier films. We also saw the trailer for James Bond, Quantum of Solace due out in November.
The cinema was plush and every seat was a large comfy love seat. What got me was all the people enthusing about the restrooms, some even dragged their friends in to see.
The hand driers in the restrooms are the new Dyson Airblades, you slide you hand in between the two sides and a stream of air blows the water off your hands, works great too.
So what with automatic flushing, soap dispensing, water and hand drying you never need touch anything in the restrooms, handy if you’re sharing popcorn.

Sweating my cods off
Filed Under uncategorized | 2 Comments
Of late we have had such weather it has made moving house a sweaty ordeal. I was thinking of getting a small wine refrigerator, sitting it on my desk, and when I get hot, open it and stick my head in. Of course I could also fill it with beverages to save a trip to the kitchen!
I still have a few storage lockers to off-load. But we are getting there slowly and the place still smells of fresh paint and new carpet. If I don’t see another cardboard box it will be too soon.
At least it seems to be cooler so far today, so I can get a few more boxes unpacked, where does all this stuff come from? We’re not necessarily pack-rats but we tend to keep stuff longer than we should.
I have been getting rid of a lot of little knick-knacks and figures that were usually sprawled all over y desk, dust collectors. But Jack Sparrow and Gollum will remain on my desk as the grand kids like to press the buttons and make them speak.
